RTS Renaissance

One of the simplest pleasures in gaming is making a plan and then watching it work (or fail, as the case may be) and no genre does that better than RTS.

This genre was my first true love. Dune II was one of the first games I ever played, and Warcraft II may have been the first PC game I ever owned. I loved it so much I bought the original Warcraft next, and only a few years later StarCraft completely took over my life.

But there were so many great RTS games back then. Command & Conquer, Dungeon Keeper, Sacrifice, Age of Empires, Total Annihilation... it was a great time to be a fan!

However, as the genre faded so did the amount of time I spent playing it.

Thankfully, over the last few years, I’ve started seeing indie developers make games that feel like the RTS games I grew up with.

So for this collection, we worked with Zade to find 7 of the best modern games inspired by those classic RTS games. If you grew up playing RTS, these should feel immediately familiar. And if you didn’t, I hope you lose as many hours to the genre as I did.
